چکیده

Ricin is a toxic glycoprotein (with several minor variants) belonging to the type II group of ribosome inactivating proteins (type II RIP) found in the seeds (beans) of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis L. (Euphorbiaceae)). It is composed of two polypeptide chains of approximately 30 kDa joined by a disulfide bond. A limited number of other plants in the same family contain type II RIPs, i.a. subtropical leguminous climber Abrus precatorius L. and, Croton

Opinion of the Scientific Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain on a Request from the European Commission Related to Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids as Undesirable Substances in Animal Feed

The term pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) describes a group of more than 350 individual compounds that share as a basic structure one of the four necine bases platynecine, retronecine, heliotridine, or otonecine. PAs are produced as secondary metabolites of more than 6000 plant species, belonging to the families of Boraginaceae, Compositae (Asteraceae) and Leguminosae (Fabaceae) and occur world-wi...

Ricinus communis Intoxications in Human and Veterinary Medicine-A Summary of Real Cases

Accidental and intended Ricinus communis intoxications in humans and animals have been known for centuries but the causative agent remained elusive until 1888 when Stillmark attributed the toxicity to the lectin ricin. Ricinus communis is grown worldwide on an industrial scale for the production of castor oil. As by-product in castor oil production ricin is mass produced above 1 million tons pe...

Opinion of the Scientific Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain on a request from the Commission related to cadmium as undesirable substance in animal feed

Contamination of animal feed materials by cadmium cannot be entirely avoided given its prevalent occurrence in the environment. Current statutory maximum levels for feedstuffs successfully prevent toxic effects in farm animals. Dietary cadmium exposure affects the absorption of trace elements, particularly that of copper resulting in an apparent copper deficiency in ruminants. In turn, high cop...

Barriers to Commercialization of a Castor Cultivar with Reduced Concentration of Ricin*

Ricin is a protein toxin found only in mature castor (Ricinus communis L., Euphorbiaceae) seed that enzymatically destroys the ribosomes of eukaryotes. The presence of ricin in the high protein meal of castor has historically reduced its value as an animal feed. Since ricin has the potential to be used as a chemical warfare and bioterrorism agent, the production and processing of castor has und...

Ricin Trafficking in Plant and Mammalian Cells

Ricin is a heterodimeric plant protein that is potently toxic to mammalian and many other eukaryotic cells. It is synthesized and stored in the endosperm cells of maturing Ricinus communis seeds (castor beans). The ricin family has two major members, both, lectins, collectively known as Ricinus communis agglutinin ll (ricin) and Ricinus communis agglutinin l (RCA). These proteins are stored in ...
